The Yaghan were coast-hugging sea nomads living in huts which they built every 3 or 4 days, after which they loaded the whole family and all their possessions in the canoe and moved to another spot. They always lit a fire in the centre of the canoe as a source of warmth. The father travelled at the front with his harpoons, the children in the middle tending the fire and bailing out the water and the mother was at the back paddling and guiding the boat. They ate mostly seals, sealions, molluscs and crabs as well as mushroom and berries.
