Extraordinary to think the Yaghan never wore clothes apart from an occasional short cape of sealion pelt. This is because clothes would've become drenched from the rain and remain uncomfortably damp on their skin. Instead they covered themselves with a protective layer of seal fat, so instead of clothes, they used grease on their bodies and fires in their huts and canoes. The fires burned continuously and this is where the name of the area comes from - when Magellan discoverd the Straits, he saw hundreds of fires on the land to his left and named it "Tierra del Fuego".
