This channel was named after the famous brig HMS Beagle which sailed here under the command of the outstanding navigator and surveyor, Captain Robert FitzRoy whose illustrious companion was Charles Darwin. The red boat in the background had just returned from an 18-day Antarctic voyage (incl. Falkland and Elephant Island - of Shackleton fame - S. Georgia and others). We spoke to an English couple here on the quayside as they were taking a long goodbye stare at the boat on which they'd just had what they described as "the journey of a lifetime".
