Our gaucho guide
There is no tourism here at all but we'd heard about a small colony of King penguins which had recently shown up. We chatted to a lovely girl in the tiny municipal museum (leopard seal skeleton and an old tractor) and asked about a tour to the penguins. "Nada" was the reply but being enterprising she called a local gaucho who knows the area and who'd take us in his truck - kinda private deal. We agreed a price and minutes later up drives a dashing chap in a big floppy beret, plus fours with shiny leather boots and says the Spanish equivalent of "jump in". It was the girl's father, a real gaucho, the sort who lassoos wild horses and can ride 3 at once. He drove us 2 hours along the coast in his pick-up truck to where the penguins had been sighted.
